Sales tax without the spreadsheet
Menu prices, online carts, and handwritten quotes often show the amount before tax. At the register the total jumps. This calculator answers two everyday questions: “What will I pay after tax?” and “If this receipt shows one number, what was the price before tax?” Both modes use the rate you supply—TipSlice does not fetch live jurisdiction rates—so you stay in control of the percentage.
Pairing tax math with tipping matters because many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Knowing the clean pre-tax figure helps you avoid tipping on tax by accident, or deliberately include it if that is your preference. After you know the tax line, jump to the tip calculator or bill splitter to finish the check.
How to use the two modes
Add tax
Choose Add tax, enter the pre-tax price, and type your combined sales tax rate as a percent (for example 8.25, not 0.0825). The tool shows the tax dollars and the total you should expect to pay. Amounts round to the nearest cent.
Remove tax
Choose Remove tax when you only have a tax-inclusive total—common on some receipts, vacation packages, or “tax included” stickers. Enter that total and the same rate. TipSlice backs out an estimated pre-tax price and the implied tax. Minor cent differences can appear versus a merchant’s register because of rounding order; treat the result as a close estimate.
Finding your rate
Sales tax in the United States is usually a mix of state and local rates. The number on a grocery receipt or restaurant check is a good reference for that merchant. City tourism sites and state revenue departments publish schedules, but rates can change and special district taxes may apply. TipSlice never claims to know your exact rate; you enter it.
Some goods are exempt or taxed at a reduced rate (for example certain groceries or clothing thresholds). If only part of a cart is taxable, run the calculator on the taxable portion alone.
Tax and tipping etiquette
Traditional U.S. restaurant tipping uses the pre-tax food and drink total. If you tip on the after-tax amount, you are being slightly more generous. Neither approach is “wrong,” but groups should agree before splitting. Our tip tools default to pre-tax math and offer a checkbox when you want the other style—see the main calculator and the tip percentage guide.
Not tax advice
This page is a convenience calculator for personal estimates. It is not a filing tool, not legal advice, and not a substitute for a point-of-sale system or accountant. Businesses collecting tax should use approved software and local guidance. Travelers should confirm whether listed hotel or tour prices already include VAT or occupancy tax.
Sales tax FAQ
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate, then add that tax to the price. A $40 item at 8.25% is $40 times 0.0825, which is $3.30 in tax, so you pay $43.30. Choose Add tax, enter the price, and type the rate as a percent, such as 8.25, not 0.0825. The calculator rounds to the nearest cent.
How do I figure out the price before tax?
If you only have a total that already includes tax, divide by 1 plus the rate written as a decimal. A $43.30 total at 8.25% is $43.30 divided by 1.0825, which comes back to about $40. Choose Remove tax, enter the total, and type the same rate. Treat the result as a close estimate, because a cash register can round in a different order.
Do I include sales tax when I calculate a tip?
Common U.S. restaurant practice is to tip on the pre-tax food and drink total, so the tax itself is not part of the tip. If you only have a tax-inclusive total, use Remove tax to estimate the pre-tax amount, then tip on that figure. Tipping on the after-tax total is a bit more generous, and it is fine when that is what your group prefers.
Why do I have to type the tax rate myself?
Sales tax in the United States is a mix of state, city, and special-district rates, and those rates change. TipSlice does not look up your location or guess a percentage. Use the rate printed on a recent receipt from that store or restaurant, or the rate your state publishes, and enter it here.
